The Emulator doesn't start...

Common bugs/problems with the Android SDK the Emulator and the ADT-Plugin.

The Emulator doesn't start...

Postby plusminus » Fri Nov 16, 2007 4:17 pm

A not starting or hanging emulator seems to be a very common problem.
:!: Note: (by now) the Emulator has not reached a final version at all :!:

Symptoms
  • The emulator should not load longer than 2-3 minutes on any machine (normally about 5-30 seconds)

This is a list of things you can try.
  • Read exactly, what your Eclipse-Console says. In most cases you find the solution right in front of you.
  • Many users got Problems using not the SUN-JRE :!: so give it a try!
  • Check if a second half-zombie emulator is running somewhere in the background (check for emulator.exe)
  • Try another Emulator-Screen-Size (Cannot imagine, why this helps on some problems ^^)
  • Try altering the Network-Options. (Cannot imagine, why this helps on some problems ^^)
  • Make a fresh installation of the ADT-Plugin.
  • Make a fresh installation of the SDK.
  • Download the latest Eclipse-Version here . (as writing this article it is: "eclipse_europa-fall2")
  • Hope for an SDK/ADT-update
  • Start praying

Symptoms
  • The Emulator freezes on "ANDROID__" or The "......oooooO" moving thing stopped.

This is a list of things you can try.
  • Looks like a broken emulator, try reinstalling the sdk

I use Debian(etch). Installed Android SDK. But when If run emulator then I see only "ANDROID_" and nothing more=( If run with option "-verbose":
Code: Select all
emulator: control console listening on port 5554, ADB on port 5555
emulator: can't connect to ADB server
emulator: ping program: /home/green/store/dev/android/tools/ddms
emulator: ping command: /home/green/store/dev/android/tools/ddms ping emulator 1.1

What did i do wrong?

Further to Emulator starting problems

I am running on a 0.5mByte machine which is probably too small but I have had the think work.

I enclose a logcat.txt file.

As for the Emulator I have a few suggestions

a)A Re-Set Button (of this run)
b)Being able to view file contents of sdcard.
c)Why not scroll the logcat on the Emulator screen??
d)Configure the my_avd setup.

Just a thought... hope some-one is working on this.

Get Emulator to Run

Postby milkround » Fri Jun 12, 2009 8:14 pm

Hi,

I am running on a 0.5mByte machine which is probably too small but I have had the thing work.
I am using Windows XP Eclipse Ganymede + Android 1.5_R2

I reckon the problem is too little physical memory - both Eclipse and the Emulator are large programs.

So to get something to work - reboot machine
I make sure all un-necessary programs are stopped (so basically only Norton + Skype left running)

I run "adb logcat" then run the program from Eclipse (no debugging) then wait.
You might also run the task monitor to see what both programs are doing %cpu and VM size.

Then wait (and wait and wait) checking the logcat screen - if it runs then fine - if not delete the emulator and try again. Most of the time the app does not start up without clicking the menu button. You will have to click OK to a few error messages starting with the AlarmClock. It should then run!!

I am not able to run on a bigger machine until end of June.
to check what effect this has

Steve

Hope this helps!

I found the solution, that I haven't seen anywhere on the internet so I decided to share it with some comunity, so I can hlp some ppl.
My solution was finding emulator.exe right click>properties>Compatibility and sellect run as Windows 98/Me.
I am running it on Windows XP
I don't know why it did helped, but most important thing is that it did :)

P.S. my emulator loads a program very slow, I don't know if it's always like that or just somethin wrong with mine ??

I confirm that this definitely improves loading time.
However, I would like somebody to tell me (once more?)
What are the hardware requirements (a bit above min) for the development machine,
say, under Windows XP?
I mean, processor and RAM.
What about hard disk? How much SATA is better in the case of Android development?
All this questions are because other simulators/emulators (J2ME and BB) load (and run) much faster
on my machine.

I have a laptop. Ubuntu 9.04, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz, 2GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce 8600M and 240GB hdd.
The emulator works as fast as my device, Samsung Galaxy, except for OpenGL (drop of frames if the emulator has to handle events).

So I see that processor makes this difference.
I have old Prescott 2.4GHz and 2GB of RAM.

I think that the emulator needs a lot of ressources which are not provided. I still have an old Pentium 4, 1GB Ram, 1.8Ghz and I have huge problems to run the emulator the first time (after starting Eclipse). I had to retry it 3 or 4 times to get it running, but "refreshing" a running application seems to be no problem.
