Which would be better? Eclipse or NetBeans?

Postby avatar-intern42 » Wed Jun 09, 2010 3:51 pm

Hello all,

I am currently tasked with creating an RSS Feed for the company I am interning at. I've run into several problems scattered throughout the program but it is still in its early phase. My question to you is; Which program do you think would be better to use for my project Eclipse or NetBeans?

I am currentloy working with Eclipse and I am getting rather irked by its constant error messages for problems that don't exist or cannot be fixed by sane individuals.

Any and all input it HIGHLY appreciated. Thank you.

Hi

A RSS feed is ran from a server. The feed will be writtin is something like php,asp,asp.net or any other server side programming/scripting language. What would you like to do with the rss on the android phone. Do you just want to view it.

Well the idea behind the whole project is to create an original (or close enough to original) RSS Feed that links up with the company's news site. That way employees can simply pull out their standard issue phones and get quick updates. I'm trying to start from the ground up with hopes of making it simple to use and operate.

hi

Ok so you need a server componnet that takes the news where ever it is located and represent it as RSS.

Rss 1
http://web.resource.org/rss/1.0/spec

Rss 2 (gives you a little more v1 will be enought if you want basic rss)
http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/rss/rss.html

If you just want to view rss on Android it comes with a rss feed viewer. I f you want to do something special with your rss feed you need to right and application that requests the rss url get the xml and then do your special thing.

Getting back to your original question: I would consider IntelliJ (Ultimate Edition), which is imho the best IDE for Android development. I switched from Eclipse to IntelliJ cause Eclipse is too unreliable (as you already mentioned yourself). IntelliJ is widely used amonst Android developers, despite the fact that most tutorials and information on the Android website refers to the Eclipse platform, but I guess it's because that platform is entirely free.

I haven't worked in IntelliJ for awhile now, but I do remember liking it better than Eclipse. Is there an Android plugin for IntelliJ? Also, I have not heard of anyone using IntelliJ for Android development, only Eclipse...

Oh yes, I almost forgot what I came here to say...never use NetBeans...

IntelliJ 9.0.2 Ultimate Edition (not the community edition) has Android support by default, no need to install an additional plugin. Ultimate Edition is not free, but worth the money imho. You can test the 30 days trial.

I've used IntelliJ, Netbeans (not for Android dev though) and Eclipse. I prefer the IDEs in exactly that order. Netbeans is still better than Eclipse (for regular Java EE dev I'd say).

IntelliJ & Android: afaik many people on the #android-dev channel use it, even Google staff itself who are working on the Android SDK themselves; I think Romain Guy as well, if I remember correctly.

Very interesting... I suspect I may purchase a license if it has Android support natively...
