USB device support

Postby Lightbow » Wed Aug 24, 2011 3:52 pm

Hi folks,

It has been nice to discover this Android Dev community, and here I am for my very first post.

I work for an ICT company and I am carrying out a preliminary evaluation to determine if Android is suitable to our needs. Specifically, I would like to know if it is possible to use a USB fingerprint reader in Android.

Thanks in advance,
Cheers,
Gianluca

Most USB devices require a USB host running to operate. Where I work, we had to kludge in a USB host mode driver into CyanogenMod to get our USB based device to work properly. We then dropped in libusb and viola, communications!

Without one of the devices(droid or fingerprint reader) operating in host mode (or USB on to the go mode), they will not talk to each other.

I personally prefer to use a bluetooth link for linking hardware to my android device, but that's just me.
