I have found this to be the most helpful tip in relation to android, am a n00b too, despite coming from strong C,C++, C# background, as this is my first foray into Android (hi all \o/), disable AV on demand scanning in those directories:
Android images for the emulator (usually C:\Documents and Settings\Users\.android
All of them can significantly speed it up, as I am using a Netbook Atom N270, it can usually hold it up (have pushed this to the limits, even VM's...) but the emulator nearly broke the camel's back, so when I disabled the AV realtime on demand scanning in those directories, the emulator's speed increased significantly, and now the netbook is able to handle it without bringing it down to its knees....
