I have Samsung Galaxy GT-I5700 android device comes with firmware version 1.5 .
1) Can I upgrade my android device firmware to 2.1 ?
2) Also If I can able to upgrade my android to 2.1 , is it possible to degrade it to original firmware version 1.5 ?

hey, I've the same problem, I have an app that I did with android google api 2.1, but my phone is a samsung galaxy i7500, so it has android 1.5... I would like to know how to change the version of android on the phone, is it possible? I heard something about root mode and using ssh... please if you have some ideas of how to do it let me know, I'll do the same.

You can definitely upgrade firmware 1.5 to 2.1, why can't? & If your device is 2.1 then you can't downgrade because some feature of 2.1 might not work in 1.5 so you can't downgrade. Thanks.
