My first app - Android FileBrowser

Postby snailfur » Sat Mar 08, 2008 5:32 pm

This is my first attempt, other than the Notepad tutorial, at creating an application on the Android Platform.

What do you think? Later in the vid, I flick the folders/files with the mouse (would be a finger irl) and you will notice a slight bug where the folders jump around.

Anywho heres the vid...

Hello snailfur,

the icons look smooth, but imo it should not take the whole screen.
Maybe you could split the screen into two parts.

Make what you've done so far a bit smaller and place it to the bottom (or top).
The rest of the screen could be filled with the contents of the folder that is focused in your current gallery-slider.
If it is a file you could display things like the file-size and dates-of change or similar.

Then it would be fancy and useful :)

Thanks for your comment.

The app is only really a test into Androids graphics abilities. The whole application uses no XML layout files and uses no subclasses of android.view.View (such as Gallery or other built-in components).

The only thing on the application is an android.view.View updated every 1/25 of a second. You'll notice the difference between my slider and Android built-in Gallery is that in the Gallery you cant 'flick' the images, you can only move the Gallery one image at a time.

Hello snailfur,

respect, it looks really fluent even in the screencasted emulator.
Maybe you could make the code open, so others could reuse.

Does it already have the iPhone-style feature, like when you give the 'slider' much speed that it keeps sliding for a while even if your finger has already left the screen? That would be pretty cool.

Yup, depending on how far you move your finger will determine the 'flick' speed which will gradually decrease and move without your finger on screen (also if you hold down left or right buttons for long period it speeds up). Dont know how clear it is in the vid though in the middle theres an example of flicking.
