MonolithAndroid - Block game for the Android platform

Postby teacake » Mon Jan 14, 2008 2:09 pm

Monolith Android is a 3D tetris like game for the android mobile phone platform. The code is based on the SDK samples of the Android SDK. The intent is to create a fun to play game, and familiarize with the rich API of the android platform. The game uses openGL ES to render the graphics. As well as the classic tetris-like gameplay, the game provides additional game modes, "Monolith" and "Puzzle" (coming soon!). Monolith mode fuses tetris with Conway's Game of life.

You can download an early look installation package from the downloads section or you can go directly to the source http://code.google.com/p/monolithandroid/source

The latest executable can be found at http://monolithandroid.googlecode.com/s ... ndroid.apk This corresponds to the latest code in the subversion repository. So if you want the latest version without compiling the code yourself, just grab this file!

You can watch a demo video of Monolith game mode in youtube:

The emulator runs very slowly on my development machine (Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M 1437 @2.13 GHz) so I would appreciate the feedback of users with faster machines or actual hardware devices.

Hello teacake,

as a Tetris fan I have to say awesome :) (TetriNet for life )

The actual game screen should (probably will) become a bit nicer, because the white looks a bit dull at the moment.
The exploding of cleared lines is a really nice feature :!:

I'm looking forward in seeing more of this :D

Regards,

Thanks for your kind words, plusminus!
I will probably use images for the background. I have a lot of features to implement but my goal is to develop incrementally so that the game remains playable. The game is not really original, but I think android must have a large number of tetris-like games, and free ones for that matter.

MonolithAndroid - new release 1.0.3 alpha

Postby teacake » Fri May 16, 2008 6:53 pm

Hello community!

I just released monolithandroid 1.0.3 alpha. It has been some time since the last release (4 months!) because I had very little time to spend on monolithandroid. I am happy to say that after quite some hacking, this version works under SDK m5-rc15!
Image
This version runs a little bit faster than the previous one and the moon backdrop image is now an OpenGL object, so when you rotate the screen, the moon moves! However, this version does not feature sound, which is something I intend to fix soon.
Planned features for 1.0.4:
1. Puzzle mode.
2. Options screen.
3. Full sound support (music and sound effects)
For additional information visit:
http://code.google.com/p/monolithandroid (project site, wiki, issue tracking and source code) and
http://tkcodesharing.blogspot.com (my blog)

Cheers,

Tasos Kleisas

New monolithandroid version 1.0.3c Alpha

Postby teacake » Mon May 26, 2008 11:24 am

I have just released a new version of monolithandroid, version 1.0.3c Alpha. This release features new original background music (performed by me!). A new backdrop (the earth) was added. This backdrop is visible when rotating the view 180 degrees. A rotating starfield was added. The sound effects are different. Visit http://code.google.com/p/monolithandroid to download this version, or use TRACKDROID or SAM application manager to get it OTA.

MonolithAndroid 1.0.4 beta released

Postby teacake » Tue Jan 20, 2009 9:10 pm

I just released a new version of MonolithAndroid. Version 1.0.4 beta is out! I've corrected a few bugs and added some features but there are still some critters in there. So to sum up, here's a small changelog.

1. Switched from using media player for sound effects and music to a hybrid SoundPool / MediaPlayer implementation. Now the sounds are played using SoundPool and the music is played with MediaPlayer. Of course some problems remain. The most important problem is that the music cannot reliably be stopped.
2. Added a highscore table. Now you can find out who is the best player. The highscore table persists, so if you restart the game, your highscore is still there.
3. Added an options menu. Now you can select the type of game you want to play, the level and the difficulty. Two types of game are provided: Classic, which resembles a well known 6 letter game, and Monolith. Monolith introduces special white blocks. If you complete a line with a white block in it, the game grid evolves according to Conway's game of life. The difficulty setting enables you to choose between two settings. Normal is your meat and potatoes game. You can drag the touch screen to rotate the playfield. That may be useful practice for the expert difficulty mode. In Expert, the playfield rotates in various axes (depending on the level you currently play) so if you suffer from motion sickness do not play this mode! Ahhh, you have been warned! The level (1-10) determines the speed of the falling blocks as well as the rotation of the screen in expert mode. In the options screen you can enable/disable the music (not currently working) and the sound effects of the game. When you are happy with the game options go to OK, press right and then choose Play to start your game.
4. Changed the music format from mp3 to ogg because it reportedly causes less crashes on the MediaPlayer.
5. The program now exits if you press the back or the home button.

A bit of a warning... I do not currently own an android hardware device, because they are not available yet in Greece where I live. So if you happen to install the game on a real device I would like to hear your comments and bug reports. You can download a signed apk from http://code.google.com/p/monolithandroid/downloads/list. Choose the monolithandroid 1.0.4 beta apk. You can post your comments here, or you can use the issue tracker found on http://code.google.com/p/monolithandroid/issues/list
Here's a grainy video made from the emulator. You can almost hear me talking in the background...

Hi teacake,

I really like the application you developed. I also just deployed it to my real device and played around. It seems to be good.

Thanks thopham. Actually, the application is now named "Robotic Space Rock" currently at 1.0.11 beta version. Did you download it from http://code.google.com/p/monolithandroid ?

Yes, I did. I checked the code out from trunk. It is the latest code, I think.
