GeoNetworking with Spoxt

Postby spoxt » Tue Apr 29, 2008 11:04 pm

Hello,

I am proud to introduce the application we have submitted for the Android Developper Challenge.

It's called Spoxt and I think the best way to describe it is an new way to communicate at the local area level, taking the best from forums, blogs, SMS/MMS and putting an emphasis on the concept of geonetworking.

We wanted to renew local communication, inviting people to discover and interact with the richness of their local world by sharing events, news, life slices, or anything exciting.

Take a look at our screenshots, we had a hard time on GUI customization ;)

Developpers' feedback is always welcome !

P.S : And thanks to Anddev and its community, it has been helpful all long the way.

I like the idea and the screen shots look nice, but didn't like 20 other people submit this exact same idea?
What's different about your?

Glad you asked :-)

In fact our concept is really different from others project:

1) Local broadcasting : Spoxt messages spread around the sender, hitting people matching their channels they subscribed to (Sport, City, Emergency, Business, etc...). Like SMS / MMS, Spoxt messages are received in almost real-time and trigger nofitications.

It can be used in very different ways:

- Classified ads: want to sell your bike, looking for someone to mown your grass, job offer
- Emergency Alert: car crashes, dog loses, buildings on fire
- Local News: what's happenning in the city, fireworks, culture, local reporting
- Commercial Activity: inaugurations, sales, special offers
- Entertainment: parties, concerts, events, modern art, urban game

You can really feel the specific taste of each local world, anywhere on the planet.

2) Buzz Propagation : Spoxt users listen for Spoxt messages around them in a customized range like 10 miles. Every Spoxt message has a limited propagation range and life expectancy. But because Spoxt messages importance is rated by users as cold, neutral or hot, the more the Spoxt messages become famous, the more they will be spreaded around and live a long life, up to the country, world or intergalatic range.

E.g. : An incredible accident occurs in the city, a spoxt is sent with the video of the crash and people around 5 miles consider it's really hot. The spoxt will be spreaded to 5 miles further, but since people around 10 miles still consider it' hot, the message propagation range will keep increasing until people are no more interested in it.

3) Versatility : A spoxt can also be sent outside the local area, using Social Network, SMS / E-Mail phone contact list, Web pages, etc...
So it can be used in many different ways like microblogging, MMS replacement, forum...

And above all, a spoxt stay really easy to create : wysiwyg interface, no hundred options, no mandatory fields except the title.

More Informations coming next !

Yeah, it really sounds good. But probably needs balancing in the beginning ;)

Balancing is a certainly an issue, but a technical one so we are ready to cope with it. The real challenge here is traffic. Since spoxts are limited in size and life duration, we will need a lot of traffic to make it a rich and interesting media, and it is not something you can generate with a bot since it's local :-)

We are thinking about applying the concept of spoxt to our deployment by putting boundaries. We will probably let some communities use it for their own use first, so they will find a personal interest.

We are debating of wich community to choose, and of course the android community is on the list. What do you think about it ? Too limited and geeky or a guaranty of a rich feedback ?
