Android Dictionary (English<->Chinese)

Postby cabernet1976 » Tue Dec 25, 2007 5:07 am

Merry Christmas.
Thanks to read me.
It is a simple program. It uses web API to consult dictionary between English and Chinese. Please see here:
http://2lovelyblog.blogspot.com/2007/12 ... inese.html

I spends long time to deal with the character set between utf-8 and gbk.
If you try this application in your emulator, you will find the some words' pronounce cannot be display correctly, e.g. ask.

Hi,

If you read the source code, you will find it do two things:
1. Find a dictionary webAPI provider, I am sure there are some India web sites will supply this service.
2. Use the webAPI to do your own dictionary program, in this step, you often need to parse XML, and deal with the character set issue between utf-8 and your language's.

Wish it will help you.

Hello cabernet1976,

Really nice work :!:

Would be awesome, if you could add some extra languages.

You could probably use the Google Translate API. Example:
 "http://translate.google.com/translate_t?langpair=en|de&text=Hello+World"

With that we would just have to parse/filter some html (not seen xml-output of the API).

There even is a Translation API from Google-Research: http://research.google.com/university/t ... /docs.html
Returns XML, but beta + only 3 language-pairs.

Regards,

plusminus,

Thanks for your suggestions, I have learn some about Google translation API, it is very good to do translation (often translate a sentence or article from a language to another) but not good as a dictionary.
Otherwise, I think your idea is very nice. I will try to do that later.

http://translate.google.com/translate_dict
can be used to implement a dictionary, but it is in http, and only support 6 pairs language. (Not support my home language here  )

e.g. dictionary 'hello' from english to German as below:
http://translate.google.com/translate_d ... pair=en|de

Hi,

It would be great if you could look into the issue i'm facing currently. My post is here.

Im facing issues related to encoding format. I was able to find out the correct charset to use for my language. But its always throwing an UnsupportedEncodingException.

Thanx,
Nitin
