Instead of speed-up & slow-down tiles, may I suggest ramps They could be shaded darker for downhill & brighter for uphill, say. The trickiness (well it's hard for me) would be figuring out what to do when you're on a hill and also accelerating sideways to the hill's slope. (I'd help, but a short coma erased all my coding skills)
