Device informations

Postby Dark_Elf » Tue Sep 23, 2008 12:36 pm

Hi, this is my first post and I'd like to say that I found many useful helps here :)!
I'm developing a project for my degrees and I have to implement a Service Discovery client for Android, which sends the device informations to the server in order to receive a list of the services that are compatible with the device itself.
Now, is there a way to get these informations (such as: bluetooth is present, wi-fi is present, touchscreen is present) etc.?
Many thanks! :)

In general terms,
Your app has to get permissions to access those services (search android docs or this forum for permissions).
And then you have to "subscribe" or hook to the services to get notifications as soon as some new event (intent-receiver) is registered.

On a side note, in this first Android release 1.0, you won't find any bluetooth API available.
They will add in future releases. (let's hope prior to years'end).

Sorry for the late of my answer.
So you mean that, instead of sending device informations to the server, I should send the permissions?

Nope.
The permissions thing, is to allow your app to access these services.
But maybe it won't be necessary to have permission to USE them, if you only want to know which these capabilities are.
You'll have to test each subdevice in a different manner.

here are some places to start:

http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/hardware/package-summary.html
http://code.google.com/android/toolbox/optional-apis.html
And for bluetooth, we'll have to wait.

I undestand.
Since this is my graduation work, maybe the test on Bluetooth will be implemented by those who will continue my work :D
Thanks a lot for the help :)
