Detect physical object sitting on the screen?

Postby rogerdodger » Thu Jan 21, 2010 1:20 am

Is there a way to detect if an object is sitting on the screen?

I was hoping that if i had a large image button and set a physical object (for example a piece of candy) on it i can detect when it is placed and when it is lifted off the screen.

Since most devices will use captive rather than resistive touch screens it wont be possible, a captive touch screen works off the static electricity from your finger where you touch the screen and therefore an inanamite object such as a piece of candy would not be recognised by the touch screen.

a resistive touch screen like the one on the Ds does work by pressure on the screen so it could be possible on a resistive screen but only a small number of android devices have them and I'd imagine as captive screens become cheaper resistive screens will die out
