Bitmap Rotation Lag

I'm working on a game right now, and it was severely lagging when I tried certain things and now I figured out it is when a sprite is rotating.

I'm just using Bitmap.createBitmap with a matrix to rotate it and then I draw that bitmap to the canvas. I end up rotating a single bitmap around 40 times in a second if it is constantly rotating every game update at 40 fps and it also lags when I bring it down to 15 fps.

Is there a different way I should be rotating it?
