[solved] Backup other apps without root

Postby Thrakbad » Thu Nov 04, 2010 1:34 pm

Hi,

is it possible to write an App, that is able to backup and restore user data from other Apps, but that is not a signature or a system App itself and does not require root access to the phone?

Thanks in Advance
Thorsten

My backup pro does it, so I would say yes.

Okay...which leads me to the question: how is it done?

By default, the data and system folders of android phones are set to read only. Because of this, you can read any data you want from the data and system folders, but you are unable to write anything to those folders. So all that should be required is to find the files you want, read in the bytes into a buffer, and output those bytes into a new file on the sdcard.

Okay, so it's only possible to back them up, but not to restore them. That's all I wanted to know, thanks :)

It is possible to restore them, but without root access, you would be required to prompt the user to install each app (as if they were downloading from market again) and, of course, data would not be able to be restored.
