Frontrunner films -- silent romance "The Artist," civil rights story "The Help" and drama "The Descendants" among them -- bring familiarity, comedy, love, humanity and a triumph of spirit that contrasts to recent years of darker, best film winners such as "The Hurt Locker" or "No Country for Old Men."

Whatever the reason, voters at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences appear in sync with movie fans' appetite for entertainment, and there is no one better suited to celebrate Hollywood than Crystal, the 63-year-old comic and star of 1980s and 1990s films like "When Harry Met Sally" and "City Slickers."

A spokesperson for the Academy told 'We would hope that every studio knows that this is a bad idea. The Red Carpet is not about stunting.'

They also told The Hollywood Reporter that he is not welcome in character and added: 'We have not banned him. We’re just waiting to hear what he’s going to do.'

It's not the first time Baron Cohen has run into trouble with the Academy.

In 2010, he was dropped as a presenter at the Oscars, after he allegedly planned to poke fun at film Avatar by dressing up as one of its characters - a blue-skinned, female Na'vi - and revealing to the audience that 'she' was pregnant with Cameron's love child.

Show bosses feared he would drive Avatar director James Cameron to storm out of the ceremony so they axed the sketch and Baron Cohen was dumped from his first ever Oscars appearance.

Baron Cohen has made a point of dressing in his famous film characters on several high profile occasions.
