Does anddev.org suffer from lack of participation?

Postby mhuggins » Tue Dec 15, 2009 11:11 pm

I joined this site to ask a couple of seemingly simple Android questions, and they've just gone unanswered despite people viewing them. There are many other questions by others with no answers too. I do see some useful tutorials and such though, so there is obviously some good stuff going on at this site, but in terms of getting answers it seems to lack participation from what I've seen. Am I the only one experiencing that feeling here?

I don't think so. I'm a dev that regularly goes through the forums to answer questions, but don't make me work to hard to answer them. If your question is not clear and to the point, then I won't answer it. Your two questions our somewhat vague.

To be honest.. after some time its simply tedious to answer
the sames questions over and over again.

If you have the time check the posts for.. lets say a week.
You will notice that 80% are already answered in another post..
but no one seem to know the search function.. or how to use it.

The left over is splitted in questions (at least) i dont understand and
questions that shows such a tremendous lack of basic java knowledge
that you would have to start from the very beginning.

But whats realy annoying is this new type of post since a few months..
they dont ask question.. they command you to fix their code.. or send
them solutions.. and of course its urgent.
Those kind of posts are just unbounded cheek.

I think if you ask decently for help and your question isnt answered a million times already
you will get your answer ... well if someone knows it of course :)

But i you expect someone will fix your code or finish your projects..
i guess in that case you would better off checking the yellow pages
for a software engeneer to hire.

I agree 100% with padde.

Like others I try to find some time to answer decent questions (if I know). But I do NOT teach to code, there is plenty of tutorials around. I do NOT write code or search for bug for someone else. If you want me to be ready to pay a bill.

I think you should be happy that someone answers any questions, but not complain.

The forum does seem very quiet though, I guess it could be becuase there's not all that many people that would be complete experts at Android and theres so much to it that some questions just cant be answered.

I agree with the above comments on repeated questions and basic questions though.

Perhaps build up a team of moderaters to help keep the forum cleaner? And provide stickies on how best to use search at the top of each forum?

Agree w/ stifry. Most posts are just horrendous to look at. If I need to exert myself to just read the post, I'm less likely to respond to it. I'm more forgiving of vagueness if the post was well intentioned and properly typed.

I won't repeat what padde has mentioned, so I'll list more. Reposts and cross-posts. The boards are clearly labeled, so pick one that best fits, not all that applies. I actually lurk multiple boards, so if I start seeing the same topic made by the same guy over multiple boards, it's getting ignored. They tend to not use the search function as well.

I have issue with this forum's rating system. The "title" is based on # of posts? So any random shmuck that spams these forums are an "Experienced/Senior/Master Developer" while people like me, who lurks more than they post, are merely "Developers"? I know I'm "Experienced" now, but that's because I've posted over the last 2 days. I'd like to get a useful rating system, where the "Experienced Developer"s are really experienced, not some guy who has 50 questions on how to program their app (20 if you count reposts and cross-posts). I may be petty by wanting this but it matters to me :P

I'm not really aware of all the android dev forums, but to me, this appears to be one of the more active ones.
