Do any of you know of any tutorials for writing games for the android. Specifically the creation of sprites and how to move them about the screen and what not. I have a background in java but mainly used java2d for this sort of thing but cant see a way to use it in this

Did you look at the official android dev guide ? There is a game in the sample code part : http://developer.android.com/guide/samp ... index.html
You can also find the sources in the android SDK folder.
