The William04 remedy does not work for me because it appears that the preconstructed database is not being sent to the device when it is run from Eclipse. Why, I can't even guess. Beginning to think that developing on android is more trouble than it's worth (I've been looking for a solution to this problem for several weeks now), having been an application/database programmer for many years now.
