Does anybody know if it is possible to extend the built-in content providers?

For example, the contacts content providers has certain fields pre-determined. Can someone add more fields to the standard contacts content provider (e.g. Birthday)? Or the way to do this should be having a separate content provider and joining them through unique ID?
