Summary: This article shows you how to transcode MXF files to a Windows or Mac compatible format, so that you can play, edit, share, or upload your MXF recordings on Windows and Mac without issues.

Q: I have some wonderful footage in MXF format. What I wanna know is how can I handle these video clips on Mac(10.6.8), or the suggestion for Windows PC(an old Windows XP).

As you know, MXF files are often produced by high-end cameras and camcorders, like Sony XDCAM, Panasonic P2, and Canon XF300/XF305 or C300 to store video, audio, and programmed data. However, MXF as a container format, still can not be natively or directly supported by many professional video editing programs like Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express, iMovie, Avid Media Composer, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, Pinnacle Studio, Windows Movie Maker, etc. What’s more, many video players, portable devices can’t open and play MXF successfully.

There are some possible solutions for you:

Solution 1: Try VLC Media Player if you only wanna view your MXF recordings on your computer.

Download and install VLC Media Player (latest version) on your Mac/Windows, drag and drop your MXF file to the program to play MXF file.

Solution 2: If you want to do further editing with MXF files in NLE(FCP, iMovie, Premiere Pro, Avid MC, Sony Vegas…) or transfer to Galaxy Tab 3, iPad Mini, upload to YouTube, etc, you will need to convert MXF format in advance.
