I made the following 2 changes:
1. I placed the 3gp file in assets folder and gave the path as private String path = "/assets/747.3gp";
2. In the playVideo() method i changed the line to mp.setDisplay(mPreview.getHolder());
even with these changes it is not working.
Please let me know where I'm going wrong.
Thanks...

I modified the path variable in the api demos example to "/data/video1.3gp" after copying a 3gp file under the data folder and it worked.

Are you able to see the 3gp file in the file explorer?

Let us know.

I think you need to put the file inside the emulator. That is the only way I think it plays a video file. You can d/l the video from youtube and then try to play it. As far as the MediaPlayer problem goes since it does use a VideoView; VideoView does not play videos which are not stored on the emulator either in memory or on the sdcard.

I have now placed the file in the sdcard folder and I am able to see the file in File Explorer.But i'm still not able to see the video.The only improvement is that now I am able to hear the music.
I tried placing the file in data folder too but the same problem persists.
I'm now playing a .wmv file (hope this is fine).I tried with a 3gp file but that doesn't work.I guess its corrupted.

Please let me know what I should be doing to see the video format.

Thanks & Regards...

I am not sure, but you are not preparing your mediaplayer.. You should officially do this before you do mp.start();
If that's not it, you might want to check out this: (I've never tried it but I've put it in my favorites 'cus it looked good back then)

Not sure is correct, that being the case why did you answer? Calling create on a MediaPlayer instance automatically calls prepare, and that url you suggested is useless, don't post unless you know what you are talking about.
