immediate audio feedback

Is it possible to have an application react immediatly to audio input, without recording it? For example, when the audio is high pitched display a bright screen, when it's low pitched display a dark screen.

This is similar to the 'Real Time Analyzer' apps and VU meter apps that use audio recorder to record a buffer full of samples, then calc the avg or peak or rms of the buffer and graph it. You would need to do a hipass and/or lopass filter at the freq you are interested in. Search for Chamberlin State variable fiter at harmony central?
