Fading a video in and out.

Does anyone know if it's possible to alpha fade a video in and out while it's playing? I've tried applying animations to the VideoView and the SurfaceView but both seem to ignore it. I'm guessing this has to do with how the surface is created.

I've also tried using a RelativeLayout to stack an image on top of a VideoView and fade it out while the video is playing, but the video surface always seems to show through the image when it first loads up and then stops rendering during and after the animation being applied to the overlay. Changing the setZOrderMediaOverlay value also seems to do nothing.

If anyone has some advice on how to make this work I'd greatly appreciate it. I know it can be done on iPhone but so far it's not looking to good for Android.
