e.g. traffic jams?

or points of interests?

I've seen Wikitude as one of the 50 winners adding points of interests to google maps.

what you are thinking of are 'Overlays'.
I have a tutorial, that overlays DrivingDirections above a MapView. ( See: http://href.to/6Cs )
