Hi,

Check out the Geocoder class: http://code.google.com/android/reference/android/location/Geocoder.html

It can transform an address into coordinates and also the other way round.

Check this page:
GmmGeocoder discussion

I cannot get the Geocoder to... geocode, has anyone seen this problem?
The error msg I get is:

... java.io.IOException: Unable to parse response from server
...at android.location.Geocoder.getFromLocation(Geocoder.java:120)

I tried setting some permissions, but that's no use...
Any clue?

Many thanks

Maybe you missed a permission :?:

Edit: the exception does not look so... :|

I will let you know but I suspect my problem was a firewall issue. I need the techies to poke a bigger hole, it seems geocoding is found on 64.233.187.147 or 17 or 83, anyhow, some of these aren't accessible for my machine directly. Actually, I did not check whether proxy issues have been addressed in 0.9 beta...

It looks like some guys have managed to redirect and got both web and maps working behind proxy check:

OK, I have set the proxy up and now it is working with the maps and everything. So, the "unable to parse response from the server" error was in fact because my proxy blocked the communication for the maps and probably for the geocoding service in particular.
The good news is that Android can now be properly configured with a proxy.
