Extending the current google maps application

Postby grem1ins » Thu Jan 15, 2009 10:15 pm

I've looked through all of the examples, searched pretty extensively and haven't found exactly what I am looking to do.

What I would like is to extend the existing maps application like a plug-in, to extend the information shown in the search balloon, override the search and balloon creation, or extend the details information list to add another link (where is currently says , directions to this address, from this address, add as contact, and has the link to the website.

I'm trying to do this without having a separate application that uses the mapview, but once installed extends the current maps application.

Anyone have any ideas, pointers to examples etc?

AFAIK it's not possible to create Android "plugins" - only Android *applications*.

Sounds like what you want to do is overwrite the existing map classes and recompile to create your own versions.

Take a look at this thread (in case you may need to kernel recompile):

You CAN make (some kind) of plugins. Android has the ability to have a task add itself to the menu of another app, as long as this app supports this (like plugins).
