While I was developing my game, I was aware that one-day I might want to get some translation done and so I externalised all my strings like any good programmer would - and I chose fonts which had a full European characterset.
What I'm wondering tho - is how many people actually do this and how much benefit did you see?
My game is free, so spending money on a professional translation wouldn't be something I'd be keen to do (I've had an estimate of about $20 per language which would hurt a bit!!).
I can't really DIY it as I have only a VERY basic grasp of French and some 'tourist' German and Dutch - not enough to avoid making a fool of myself!!
I considered Babelfish - most of what I need are short/simple phrases - but I know I'd end-up with something embarrasingly stupid in there ;0
I'm sort-of assuming that having the major languages represented (French, German,Spanish) would help promote my game quite a bit - I know Russian implies an extended charset I may not be able to support and 've not really given any thought to the more complex translations like Asian languages...
Even if I do this, I worry that I'll just get a lot of questions from people in a language I don't speak - it's hard enough to understand some of the questions I get IN ENGLISH!
