programming ON device

Hi and sorry for my noob question.
I'd be interested in one of these android tablets.
Is it currently possible to develop direct ON an android device? (don't want fring)
would be grat to programm direkt on the tablet. wouldnt it?
due it's basicaly an linux system (correct me plz if i'm wrong), there should be an way to compile on device??
i did so on my wm6 device by using basic4ppc.

i've read today good news..... basic4android (basic4ppc) announced a basic4android version (early beta) and "maybe" an on-device-programming version :-)
