Playing audio on voice call

Postby keemaker » Thu Sep 25, 2008 1:51 pm

All -

I was wondering if it could be possible to play audio on a voice call? If anyone had any leads or could direct me places to investigate, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks,
Pat

Hi keemaker,

I don't know whether there will be a standard app, but at least it's possible.
There is an application in the video that Diane shows where the selection of any music as ring tone is possible.

So when a phone call comes in you want to play a sound other than the default ringtone? This could be done using a IntentReceiver (or BroadCast receiver, what is it) and have it listen to the phone call intent.

I should rephrase, I would like to play an audio while in a phone conversation so the person I'm on the phone with can hear the audio. So I would like to make a call, then play some music to the caller (instead of my voice being on the call). Do you think that could be possible.

Thanks!

Ok, now I get it. Unfortunately this is not possible, I read it somewhere in the docs if I'm not mistaken.

oh ok, yea... I figured it would probably be pretty tough/impossible. Thanks for your response though!

I believe it was in the mediaPlayer docs.
Extract from http://code.google.com/android/toolbox/apis/media.html:
Note: You can only send audio files to the standard output device; currently, that is the device speaker or a Bluetooth headset. You cannot currently play sound files in the conversation audio.

That's pretty explicit :D.

Does anyone know if this capability will be ever added to Android? I have several application ideas which would require the ability to playback sounds through an active phone conversation.

Is there something about phone hardware that makes this more difficult than it is worth?

Thanks!
