New to Android Game Development

Hi everyone, good day!


I'm Vincent, a student taking up a bachelor's degree in Computer
Science. I would say that I'm a total newbie when it comes to Android
Programming for I have only started a few months ago. This coming
semester, me and my group plans to take up Android Game Development
for our thesis. For the duration of 7 months, will it be possible for
us to complete the documentation and the game itself knowing only the
basic of Android Programming as of now?

We plan on using Java for the game. We've been programming Java for
almost two years and gained a decent amount of knowledge in it. We've
done small simulation of things on Java like projectile motion, but we
haven't really tried developing games, especially on mobile devices.
Will it be enough, or do we need to study J2ME before we start on our
plan?

Also, I've just started reading Mario Zechner's book, Beginning
Android Games, and I've found it very interesting. The book will be a
great reference for me and my group for our upcoming thesis. And about
the book, does it also discuss on using OpenGL-ES 2.0 or just about
1.0? Will it be fine using 2.0 instead of 1.0 nowadays?

Another thing is, as far as I know, we are not allowed to use game
engines for developing games. So AndEngine is not an option for us.
Well, about libgdx, it is not a game engine right? It's more of a
library, or a framework. right? And as total newbies, do you think
that we'll be able to use it properly and will it lessen our burdens?

And I've got a few more questions before I end this.

- Our target Android OS would be Android 2.3.3 (Gingerbread), will it
be alright? I mean, if we manage to create a decent one, we plan on
publishing and sharing it.
- For our current level, shall we go for handsets, or tablets?
- Should we consider making the game compatible for G1's, or make it
more decent that would be hard to run for a G1?
- We plan on making it 2D, but given the time constraint and the lack
of knowledge, should we try 3D or stick with 2D first?

And lastly, this is more of a survey. As a user/developer/gamer, I
just wanted to know what kind of game would you prefer to play on your
smartphone, is it:
- a platformer game,
- a puzzle game,
- a 2-player game,
- a multi-player game,
- a simulation game,
- a casual game,
- an RPG game,
- or other types?

Could you specify a bit, I just wanted to have some ideas for our
game.

Sorry for this long post, I'm just eager to learn things in this new
path I took.

And as a total newbie, I would really appreciate your comment,
suggestion, criticism, and correction to the things I've posted.
