Making 2D games, Java required?

If I wanted to make simple 2D games for Android, do I have to use Java, or is there some alternative like C and SDL or Python?

I'm pretty sure you have to use Java, as that's the language used for the platform. If you know C/C++ you should be able to pick up Java fairly easily, or so I'm told. I'm not a programmer, though, so don't take my word for it.

You would have to use Java.

Its relatively easy to pick up, especially if your familiar with other Object Oriented programming languages. There is the NDK which you could look into if you really want to dodge Java, but that's mainly for 3D graphics. 2D would be much easier with the standard Android Java SDK.

Theres lots of decent tuorials over at the Android Developer site to get you started with Android and Java.

How does Java with the SDK compare to say....doing a 2D game with C and SDL with the NDK?
