Intellectual Property\Copyright

Postby bishamon79a » Tue Apr 05, 2011 11:42 pm

Not sure if this is the right place or of anyone can help.

Basically I've written an App that reads in a file and presents the information. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with the whole copyright issue.

I can't imagine the company who's software produces the file being too happy if I were to publish the application to the marketplace.

They currently have an iPhone port but appear to have completely shunned the Android market which led me to investigate their file (months of head scratching and analysis) and determine what information can be extracted.

I'm now in the position where I can read the file and present it in Android (or anything else for that matter). The files are publicly available via numerous websites, and I know there's a demand to view them on Android.

So my immediate question is whether I'm infringing on any copyrights if I were to publish it to the marketplace? Is a file format even protected by copyright?

I know its a bit of a cloudy issue but any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
