How to have a 'free' and 'paid' version of the same App...

Postby johnpeat » Tue Sep 06, 2011 11:03 pm

I'm just wondering how people go about doing this and if there are any catches/snag/issues I should be aware of.

I understand LVL/Android Licensing and I can get that working AOK - but I'm wondering how people go about having a demo/free version and a paid version of their apps in the Market (or do people prefer the 'crippled if not licensed' approach to this??)

As I understand it, you cannot upload 2 APKs with the same path ??

e.g. com.mydomain.game???

If you gave the demo a unique path name to upload it separately tho, saved data wouldn't be shared with the 'full' app when it's installed??

or am I missing something??

Hey,

You have to create a new path for the paid app. And like you thought, the data won't transfer unless you write some code to yank the data from the free app...

I found this thread on the Google Android forum, hope it'll help some -

Good luck :)

That thread pretty much confirms what I'd thought would happen - useful reading tho, thanks for that!!

The alternate solution would be somehow harnessing the licensing system to cripple/enable bits of a single App then? Obviously this is slightly easier to hack/crack than having 2 separate APKs (as the 'paid' code is obviously included and I'm sure someone has figured out how to get around the licensing system by now).

I've noticed some Apps have the ability to download addons to themselves (obviously example would be ASTRO the file manager) - this would also be a possibility but I've no idea how they go about that trick and I assume it's probably complicated (ContentProviders?)

p.s. this post suggests one possible - and seemingly simple - method

Also been looking at Google's own In-App-Billing stuff - but like LVL, that obviously locks-you-in to the Android Market (Amazon's market isn't amazing but it's entirely foolish to make putting your stuff in there hard work!!)

Maybe I need to stick with 2 separate Apps and just figure-out a way of passing data between them (or storing it online using a common key)??
