Summary: If your Kindle Fire HD 7"/8.9" can't play one of the 1080p videos (like MKV, AVI, VOB, Tivo, MPG, MTS, MOV, FLV/F4V), you'll need to encode 1080p Videos to Surface supported video formats first. Here's how.

Both the the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD's beautiful 1,280x800-pixel screen and the 8.9-inch model's 1,920 x 1200-pixel screen are great for watching movies. However, currently the Kindle Fire HD only supports H.264, MPEG4, H.263, and VP8 video codecs. If you have collected lots of 1080p/720p HD videos formatted in MKV, AVI, VOB, Tivo, MPG, MTS, MOV, FLV/F4V and want to play them on your Kindle Fire HD 7" or 8.9" tablet, you'd need to convert 1080p videos to MP4 for Kindle Fire HD playback. Below is a simple tutorial for you, guaranteed to get your 1080p MKV/AVI/TiVo/VOB/MPG etc. videos play on Kindle Fire HD smoothly. Just follow it.

Converting MKV/AVI/VOB/TiVo/MPG/FLV to MP4 for playback on Kindle Fire HD

Step 1: Install and run the excellent Kindle Fire HD Video Converter on your PC, and then click "Add Video" or "Add from folder" to import your source materials. Batch conversion is supported so that you can add multiple files.

Step 2: Choose the output format. Click "Format" bar, you can get optimized videos for Kindle Fire HD under Android > Amazon Kindle Fire HD H.264(*.mp4) (To get the customized preset, pls download a patch here). The output videos could fit on your device perfectly.

Tips: If you like, you can click "Settings" to change the video encoder, resolution, frame rate, etc. as you wish. According to my experience, the file size and video quality is based more on bitrate than resolution which means bitrate higher results in big file size, and lower visible quality loss, and vice versa. For watching videos on Kindle Fire HD 7 or 8.9, 720p with 1500~2000kbps is just all right.

Step 3: After above settings, you can start the MKV/AVI/VOB/TiVo/MPG/FLV to Kindle Fire HD MP4 conversion. Once the process completes, locate the files and transfer and copy the converted MP4 videos to your Amazon tablets. As you see, now you can effortlessly watch your 1080p/720P HD videos on Kindle Fire HD 7/8.9.
