Hello Android Development Community,
I’m a Dutch student and I want to do research on app development.
But because I have no experience building apps whatsoever, I need some help. I tried contacting businesses that build apps, but because my research has a negative connotation, they don’t want to help me. I hoped that maybe you guys could help me out by answering some questions.
My research is about apps and privacy and if it’s possible for, for example someone with no experience in building apps but with bad intentions, to create an app that collects data of the user.
I’ve read about ‘snooping’ which means that an app turns on the microphone or camera. The patterns of the sounds and images are used to collect information about the app users. This is done without noticing the app user about it.
Another thing is the ‘phishing’ of userdata on smartphones, like: contacts, text messages, downloads, photo’s and so on.
Do you think that:
-If someone (with bad intentions) wants to collect such data and invests a month in how to do this. Would they be able to pull off the things I mentioned above? Or is it really hard to do so?
-It is harder to make an app control hardware (in the case of ‘snooping’) or to gather userdata by ‘phishing’ ?
-And as an conclusion, what’s the best protection against ‘snooping’ or ‘phishing’ ?
Thank you so much for your time :] !
