Android Client - What's the best way?

Postby bloodshoteyes » Tue Feb 14, 2012 4:41 pm

Hi everybody.

Me and my schoolmates are making an Android app, which should get data from an Apache Tomcat server/mySQL database.
Everything is REST, so we're using JSON and possibly GSON (if it isn't too difficult).

So, the question is:
Do we HAVE to use SPRING (springsource) on the Android-side? Having a hard time finding some decent information about using it on the Client side.
And which other things would be good to use on the client side?

Please help.
Sorry - we're all new at this.

Ps. Would be nice if you guys also could provide me with some sample code or something.

What why would you need spring?

Just hit the restful URL with a httpclient then parse the JSON into a JSON object, or have I missed something?

Well, that was our first thought.
But then the other guys just mentioned Spring, because it would be "Good programming/nice code", if that made sense.

(Thanks for the extremely fast reply)

What's the advantages in using Spring?
It just says that it's a robust java-based REST client?
If it's that simple, then why use it?

I've never used in on Android, but it's basically a framework to make life 'easier' for you, I don't know how this would transition to Android though. I wouldn't bother on a mobile device, it's overkill. Other advocates may have a different opinion though.
