Fast manipulation with floats in a FloatBuffer

Storing values with 'put' in a FloatBuffer is pretty slow. Is there a faster way to modify values in a FloatBuffer? A float is 4-byte long, so I guess putting only bytes would be much faster, but I need floats :)
