Getting a smooth bitmap

I'm working on a chess app and am using for pieces the png images from Wikipedia commons. They look great as .png, but when they get miniaturized just using BitmapFactory.decodeResource(...) they don't look very good on the Eclipse emulator. I tried setting a few BitmapFactory.Options as well with no improvement, also tried using various image qualities for the .png and no noticeable change.

What's a good procedure for getting a nice smooth version of a .png that can be drawn pretty small onto a canvas? The functionality offered in BitmapDrawable looks interesting (anti-aliasing and filtering, which seem like what I need), but I'm not sure how those work or whether they are likely to solve my problem.
